Protest Day 2
Politican homes and properties are being targeted.....
My goal in doing this is to firstly, let you all know that I’m safe. Secondly, to try to get actual news out. I’ve seen several stories that have reported straight up lies about what happened in Nepal yesterday. They write to cover the governments violent actions, and remove the horror of what happened to young students yesterday. The corruption continues.
The tension is palatable today all around Kathmandu Valley. We’re under a curfew. No one is allowed outside of their homes, and in certain areas the police are ordered to shoot on site anyone who is seen on the streets. However, there are still riots all over the city. Angry citizens are targeting government buildings, politician homes and politician owned properties. Many places have been set on fire, including a school that is known to educated many politician children. It’s an ugly seen today.
I am safe. I am at home. I live pretty far outside the bounds of the main highway. Even here on our main road, we could hear chanting and protesting happening. It’s currently quiet, but there was several eruptions of chanting and protesting happening earlier today. People are angry. People are restless. People are demanding to be heard.
Social media has been restored and has been flooded with images from yesterday and today. Many are calling for the politicians to resign and elections to be moved up. Lots of accusations toward corrupt politicians. Some of them are starting to flee the country. And we just learned that the airport has been shut down.
The fire is burning, both internally and externally.
It’s hard to know how this will go and what will happen next. This could be a long ordeal. This country needs change. It’s people need to be served by their government. That has always been the biggest difference to me between the US and Nepal. In the US, we have government corruption but our social welfare programs stand. If I have to file bankruptcy, I know that there will be programs to support me that I can depend on. That isn’t the case in Nepal. Here the people give no trust in their government and they depend on their families instead. There is no faith in the government at all.
I will keep you updated. Thanks for caring about me. Thanks for caring about Nepal. Pray. Not to benefit from this, but give to Naya Shristi to help us as we support mental health and scholarships in Nepal. It’s needed now more than ever.
Thank you.
